As artificial characters begin to generate language and behavior beyond a predetermined script, authorship becomes difficult to locate. Who—or what—is creating the character? Is it the artist who establishes its identity and conditions, the AI system and its designers, the accumulated human language from which the system learned, the people who converse with it, or the history of relationships that gradually forms around it?
The participants consider whether artists may increasingly create characters by designing the conditions in which they can develop rather than determining everything they say and do. Does this diminish the artist’s authorship, or redefine authorship as the creation of relationships, constraints, and possibilities? If authorship is shared, is responsibility shared as well? Can a character eventually become one of its own authors?
Perhaps authorship no longer resides in one place. Perhaps it circulates among everyone—and everything—involved.
